Can you believe we’re already halfway through 2024? As we gear up for the upcoming 4th of July celebrations, it’s essential to remember that this holiday can pose risks to our pets, particularly from fireworks. Here are some tips from our veterinarians to help ensure your pet’s safety and peace of mind during this festive time:
- Keep Your Pet Indoors: Pets are sensitive to loud noises, flashing lights, and strong smells—fireworks encompass all of these. We strongly advise keeping all pets indoors during firework displays. While it may be tempting to include them in the festivities, the loud noises can cause pets to run off and potentially encounter danger.
- Ensure Proper Identification: In case your pet does get lost, proper identification is crucial for a swift reunion. Check that your pet’s collar fits securely and is in good condition. Make sure identification tags have current contact information. Also, verify your pet’s microchip details are up-to-date.
- Day-of Precautions for Dogs and Cats:
- Take your pet for a walk during daylight hours to avoid needing to go outside during fireworks.
- Close windows and curtains to dampen external noises. Playing calming music or leaving on the TV can also help mask fireworks sounds.
- Create a safe space indoors with their bed, toys, and blankets. Many find success in placing pets in an interior room, such as a bathroom, during fireworks.
- Cats may prefer hiding in a secure spot like under furniture or in a closet. Allow them to stay there until they feel comfortable emerging.
- Day-of Precautions for Exotics and Other Pets:
- Bring outdoor pets indoors for the evening to ensure their safety.
- Partially cover their pens or cages with blankets to minimize noise and provide a sense of security. Leave a portion uncovered for them to observe their surroundings.
- Provide additional bedding for small animals to burrow into.
We hope these tips help your entire family enjoy a safe and peaceful 4th of July celebration. If you believe your pet could benefit from further assistance with anxiety, please don’t hesitate to contact one of our offices. Our veterinarians are ready to help you develop a tailored treatment plan.
Wishing you and your pets a wonderful holiday!
